MIL-STD-461 CS114–CS117

CS114 to CS117 are all specific standards within the subcategory of conducted susceptibility in the umbrella standard of MIL-STD-461.

CS114 applies to all interconnecting cables, including power cables for equipment in the frequency range of 10 kHz to 200MHz. This standard excludes coaxial cables to antenna ports of antenna-connected receivers unless they are on surface ships or submarines. The purpose of CS114 is to establish that the equipment under test (EUT) is able to withstand RF signals coupled onto EUT associated cabling.

Test equipment needed for CS114 requirements:

• Measurement receivers
• Current injection probes
• Current probes
• Calibration fixture: coaxial transmission line with 50 ohm characteristic impedance, coaxial connections on both ends, and space for an injection probe around the center conductor.

• LISNs

CS115 applies to all aircraft, space, and ground interconnecting cables, including power cables. The purpose of this standard is to establish the ability of the EUT to withstand impulse signals coupled onto EUT associated cabling.  

Test equipment for CS115: 

• Pulse generator (50 ohm) charged line (coaxial)
• Current injection probes
• Drive cable (50 ohm) 2 meters, 0.5 dB or less insertion loss at 500 MHz
• Current probes
• Calibration fixture: coaxial transmission line with 50 ohm characteristic impedance, coaxial connections on both ends, and space for an injection probe around the center conductor.
• Oscilloscope (50 ohm) input impedance
• Attenuators (50 ohm)
• Coaxial loads (50 ohm)
• LISNs

CS116 applies to all interconnecting cables, including power cables, and individual high side power leads for equipment within the frequency range of 10 kHz and 100 MHz. Power returns and neutrals do not need to be tested individually. This standard can also apply to submarine applications relating to cables and leads that exit the pressure hull. The purpose of CS116 is to establish the ability of the EUT to withstand damped sinusoidal transients coupled onto EUT associated cables and power leads.

Test equipment needed for CS116 requirements:

• Damped sinusoid transient generator, ≤ 100 ohm output impedance
• Current injection probes
• Oscilloscope, 50 ohm input impedance
• Calibration fixture: Coaxial transmission line with 50 ohm characteristic impedance, coaxial connections on both ends, and space for an injection probe around the center conductor Current probes
• Waveform recording device
• Attenuators (50 ohm)
• Measurement receivers
• Coaxial loads (50 ohm)
• LISNs

CS117 contains similar requirements to RTCA/DO-160 pertaining to lightning immunity test standards. This standard requires multiple stroke surge testing using a lightning transient generator.

Test equipment needed for CS117 requirements:

• Lightning transient generator
• Injection Transformers
• Oscilloscope
• Current monitor probes
• Attenuators (50 ohm) as needed on current monitor probes
• Voltage monitor probes, high impedance
• Monitor loop, low impedance wire loop
• Calibration loop, low impedance wire loop
• Capacitor, >28,000 µF for DC power inputs
• LISNs
