Continuous Wave (CW) transmitters are devices that use CW technology to enhance communication capabilities. Primarily employed in radiotelegraphy, continuous waves are used to transmit short or long pulses of RF energy, creating the dots and dashes that form Morse code characters. This method of transmission is known as Interrupted Continuous Wave (ICW). CW transmission is the earliest form of radio communication and remains in use for long-range communications today.
CW transmission offers several advantages, including a narrow bandwidth that requires less output power, and a high level of intelligibility even in challenging conditions like heavy traffic noise or storms. A CW transmitter consists of four key components: a generator, amplifier, keyer, and antenna. Each part plays a vital role in managing RF oscillations—generating, amplifying, and switching the RF output on and off—while the antenna radiates the keyed output.
